Farr-e-Nuff Largs Regatta Week 2012

Greg Pitt September 21, 2012

The Clydeport Largs Regatta week took place from 25th August to 2nd September.

Cumbraes Weekend Regatta kicked everything off. On the Saturday there were 3 windward leeward courses set in light wind just to the north of the Cumbrae islands. All classes sailed on the same trapezoid course which led to some busy but exiting mark roundings at times.

In IRC Class1 ‘Prime Suspect’ made good use of their Saturn Code 1 jib giving them two firsts and a second over the day. ‘Eos’ sailed a consistant series, winning the round island race on runday to take 3rd overall.

Saturn Sails took first and second overall in IRC Class 3. ‘Sloop John T’ was first overall, sailing a solid series counting a first second and a third. Second overall was ‘Now or Never’ who were joint first in the round island race on Sunday missing out on winning overall by a mear half point, or one second!! Well done to both teams.

The 100 Guineas searies ran midweek in the largs channel with racing for 3 keelboat classes. Class 1 was won by John Kent’s ‘Farr e Nuff’ with ‘Now or Never’ taking second. Class 3 was won by the Eboat ‘Excalibur’. These three boat all sail with Saturn Sails.

Large Regatta Week 2012

The Scottish Two Handed Race brought Largs Regatta Week to a close on Saturday 1st September. A windy day meant that boats got round the course quick with even most of the class 1 boats making it back before it got too dark! Class 1 sailed the long course round Arrun. ‘Sloop John T’ sailed by Ian Thomson and John Highcock showed the fleet the way round and their hard work was rewarded with first overall, although they were pushed hard by some of the smaller boats in the fleet.

Saturn Sails boats took forst, second and third in Class 3. The winner was ‘Saboo’ a Holman & Pye 42 sailing with Saturn Sails main and mizzen. Behind ‘Saboo’ was a battle of the Moody 336’s with ‘Piecemaker’ getting the better of ‘Cool Bandit 2’. Class 4 was won by ‘Farr e Nuff’ with ‘Excalibur’ taking second. These small boats must have sailed through some pretty tough weather!

Regatta Yacht of the Week was won by John Kent and his young crew on ‘Farr e Nuff’. Well done to them!

Well done to all Saturn Sails customers who compeated in the Clydeport Largs Regatta Week. A Big thank you to Largs Yacht Haven and Largs Sailing Club for organising a great week.

Well done to all Saturn Sails customers who competed in this year West Highland Yachting Week.

The week brought a variety of conditions ranging from light wind drifting races to windy passage races to Tobermory.

Iain Laidlaw's J97 'Jaywalker' won class 2 overall. Their score line included a string of first and second places. Jaywalker sails with Saturn D4 membrane main and headsails. John Watson’s Elan 40 'Texa' took second overall in Class 2, missing out on class victory by only 2 points. Texa sails with all Saturn Sails including Tri-radial, carbon fibre main and roller reefing genoa.

ROUND IRELAND YACHT RACE (hosted by Wicklow Sailing Club)

Round Ireland Yacht Race 2012

Greg Pitt July 09, 2012

Rod and Mhairi Stuart’s Elan 410 ‘Eos’ was the only Clyde boat to take part in this middle distance offshore race round Ireland.

Conditions varied during the race and the young team on board ‘Eos’ had to sail hard throughout to make up time after a breakage early on. Some good tactical decision making during the last third of the race meant that they finished the race with an impressive 3rd in class 2.

Huge congratulations go to the whole ‘Eos’ team who sailed with Saturn sails throughout. For more information on this race, results and photos have a look at the link below.

The boat is now in Cork for Cork Week. We will keep you posted throughout the event!

IRC Scottish Championships 2012

The Old Pulteney IRC Scottish Championships, organised by Mudhook Yacht Club was sailed out of Largs on the weekend of the 16th, 17th of June.

There was no racing on Saturday as due to the strong winds the race committee took the decision to call racing off for the day.

Four well run races were held on Sunday in 10 to 16 knots. There was a good mix of courses from windward, leeward to triangles giving something for everyone.

It was a clean sweep for Saturn Sails boats, winning both classes overall.

IRC Scottish Championships 2012

The Elan 410 ‘EOS’ owned by Rod and Mhairi Stuart won class 1 without dropping out of the top two and clinching two race wins. Four points behind them was Charlie Frize’s Mills 36 ‘Prime Suspect’ who was flying their new Saturn Headsail.

In class 2 it was the current Swan European champions ‘Sloop John T’ who stole the show with a score line of two firsts and two seconds. In a tight fleet where finish times were mere seconds apart it was ‘Sloop John T’ was also awarded the overall trophy for the event. We were pleased to see Neill Sandford’s MAT 10.10 ‘Now or Never 3’ showing great pace and scoring a race win along with a solid third overall.

Well done to all Saturn Sails customers who competed in the event and we hope everyone continues to support keelboat sailing in Scotland.
